Passage #499: 10 April 2019

The Frond Files

If you were riding a bike around the city late yesterday afternoon or early evening, you no doubt experienced that particular L.A. cycling game: dodge the falling palm fronds. While perhaps appearing delicate and light on a typical day, swaying gently against the sky, when the wind really gets going those things come hailing down violently. Watch out!

Ever being ones to tempt fate (since it appears that we might get significant wind again tonight), we thought this week we could visit some of the iconic stands about town. Palm trees are, as you may have heard, slowly disappearing from Los Angeles, either simply reaching the end of their typical lifespans or falling prey to weevils or disease. Let’s enjoy them while we can.
